Corporate firms and universities have a long and, more often than not, mutually beneficial history of working together. It’s not uncommon that the result of these research collaborations are the development of innovative solutions, which bring an added value to the company, the research students, as well as society in general.
indoo.rs has always been supportive of and working with students, researching in the field of Indoor Positioning and Navigation. One recent industry 4.0 project emerged in cooperation with our partner and logistics technologies provider Zetes and the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). The TU Wien is renowned for their prominent research efforts and contributions and is equipped with several showrooms and laboratories, one of which serves as testing ground for the joint project with indoo.rs – the so called “Pilotfabrik”.

industry 4.0: The project
The laboratory simulates a working environment at a factory. Robots which are moving around the premises are simulating real-life workers, whose movements are tracked with the indoo.rs “Worker Tracker” solution. Students and everyone else interested can access the showroom and test the solution there.
As far as hardware is concerned, 25 Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons, provided by Zebra, were installed throughout the Pilotfabrik venue. The mobile app which is required in order to be able to use the Indoor Asset Tracking technology was designed and developed by Zetes.
“We are focused on app development for all kind of logistics processes where indoor navigation is one of the emerging technologies, becoming more and more relevant. We appreciate the professional approach of indoo.rs in our cooperation at the Pilotfabrik and are happy to be part of this innovative project.” – Sarah Naber, Head of iOS & Mobile Development
The real-life scenario could look something like this; factory workers can be tracked and their real-time position displayed on a map in the backend. This not only helps supervisors allocate their resources, but also manage emergency situations better. In the event of an emergency, e.g. a fire breaking out in a specific area, all workers in this area can be identified, located and evacuated as fast as possible. This can also support safety when working in dangerous environments, like heavy engineering.

Pilotfabrik is a research laboratory and testing ground dedicated to the development of innovative industry 4.0 technologies. In order to create solutions that help master the challenges posed upon factories, such as energy consumption, mass production vs. individualized and flexible production etc., an adequate environment with actuall machines are required for testing. That’s exactly what the Pilotfabrik offers to their students and companies.
