SLAM Engine™ – The Foundation Has Been Laid
At the beginning of 2016 we launched our revolutionary SLAM Engine ™. It is a technology innovation, which enables easy setup of your Indoor Navigation framework by reducing the required manual input to a minimum. Recently we put it to the test against competitors at the GEO IoT testbed, where it delivered an excellent performance. For us this was to be expected, since we have used it on a number of installations and have been getting fantastic feedback on it. This was only ever planned to be the first step of the indoo.rs SLAM Revolution.
Now we are moving on to the SLAM Crowd Engine™.
The Power Of The Crowd
Together we can achieve more! Hence, indoo.rs uses the power of the crowd to enable the most accurate Indoor Navigation and easy maintenance of the map.
The already released SLAM Engine™ enhanced by the crowd make for a never before seen indoor mapping experience. While the SLAM Engine™ creates a radio map in the shortest time possible, the SLAM Crowd Engine™ takes care of automatically updating it.
This revolutionary approach does not only involve the world’s first crowd-sourcing used for Indoor Positioning, but also brings advantages for every customer by making everything self-learning and self-healing. What that means is that by leveraging data from phones walking around inside the respective building, SLAM remembers the routes people take around obstacles and update the map accordingly. As a result, we get better maps that improve over time and adapt to changes in the environment
For instance, when a new wall is added or removed inside the building, the map will be updated automatically, without having to take dedicated measurements. This is beneficial to all industries, but for large rollouts with a very limited time frame for setup, for retail and events, the SLAM Crowd Engine™ will be particularly useful.
Imagine testing a quick new layout for the store with the knowledge that the new map will be automatically up to date for the customers to use. Or knowing that an event which is only fully laid out two hours before the opening, will have an accurate map. To achieve this, the people doing the set-up and the exhibitors can be used to help keep the map accurate by being part of the “Crowd”.
Those are just two quick examples of how the SLAM Crowd Engine will be a further step in the SLAM revolution.
Figure 1 Explained
The figure on top shows an app user navigating along the black dotted path. His phone detects Beacons at certain points (orange squares). Along with the radio map (green points), these are used to guess the user’s location (dark blue ellipses). The sensor data is used to detect steps and headings, which are then fused to a location to get a trajectory (red line). SLAM then matches the data to improve the trajectory (blue line). The estimated positions when seeing the radio data (blue triangles) are interpolated to update the map points.

Figure 2: The SLAM Evolution
The figure above gives an overview of the three stages of the SLAM evolution. After successfully launching the SLAM Engine and with the SLAM Crowd Engine coming soon, the final stage, planned for 2017 is Crowd Learning. It will completely automate the mapping process, by combining a big data approach with crowd collected data. As a result, Indoor Positioning projects can be realized a lot faster and more cost efficiently.
